San Diego Habitat for Humanity a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. By building homes in partnership with families in need, SDHFH seeks to eliminate substandard and poverty living conditions in San Diego County.

The Challenge:

SDHFH needed to improve its aging IT infrastructure to improve reliability, performance, and scalability for the organization’s future growth. Continued expansion of the organization had resulted in network storage limitations, unreliable electronic communication, insufficient disaster recovery procedures, security vulnerabilities, and unnecessary operational procedures.

The Solution:

After evaluating SDHFH’s operational requirements and existing infrastructure, UpTime OnTime was able to develop a solution that would allow for IT stability and scalability over the long term. Working together with SDHFH, UTOT designed a completely new network topology and infrastructure solution from the ground-up.

UTOT donated an extensive amount of hardware to build their new solution including: HP Proliant BL p-Class Server Blade Enclosure with several HP Proliant BL20p G3 blade servers, a HP MSA-30 JBOD with Enclosure, Cisco PIX 515 Firewall, and a Rack Solutions 44u 4-post rack enclosure.

SDHFH and their talented construction team successfully converted an old on-premises restroom into a dedicated server room, complete with dedicated power and temperature control to house their new IT equipment.

With successful teamwork and new equipment, UTOT was now able to build a new network from scratch to replace SDHFH’s existing architecture. Leveraging UTOT’s software and hardware expertise in products from leading vendors such as Microsoft, Symantec, Research In Motion (RIM), and Barracuda Networks, SDHFH now had a solid IT foundation from which to grow with peace of mind.

After of a year in production this solution has continued to prove itself to be reliable, easy to use, and scalable. Continued support provided by UTOT’s experienced staff of engineers has proven invaluable to keeping this solution a sustainable one.

New capabilities and benefits of this collaboration include:
  • More than 600% increase in available storage space for applications, files, etc
  • Extensive backup and disaster-recovery procedures
  • Centralized communications including Blackberry Enterprise Server, Microsoft Exchange, and VPN capability for off-site employees
  • Infrastructure protection including client and networking antivirus protection, spam filtering, and centrally-managed security implementations
  • 24/7 support provided by UTOT with over 45+ years of combined IT experience

San Diego Habitat for Humanity contracts UTOT for regularly scheduled IT maintenance for their network and also retains UTOT for Emergency service as needed.
